I am an attorney with a solo practice. I specialize in appellate defense for the poor. My job combines my passion for social justice and need for a flexible work schedule. I love my job and feel fortunate to be doing such fulfilling work.
I grew up passionate about righting judicial disparity and social injustice - especially for those with few opportunities in life. But I was often dismissed as naive and idealistic. Ten years after graduating law school and staying at home with my three children, I finally found my way back into law. By chance, I discovered that I could stay idealistic - and get paid for it! The Massachusetts public defenders office pays private attorneys (not very much) to represent indigent clients either at the trial or appellate level. I only do appeals which means that all of my clients have been either convicted of a crime or lost their rights at a civil trial (I appeal criminal convictions, termination of parental rights, and sex offender classifications). I spend my time researching constitutional issues, reading volumes of transcripts and exhibits, writing briefs, and arguing my position at the second highest court in the state. As my own boss, I decide how much work I take. Because of that flexibility, I am able to balance work and family pretty easily. And I adore my job which I feel so fortunate to say!
